The glut that’s swept Australia’s wine market gives you the very excuse you need to head to Mudgee, a premium wine-producing region three hours north-west of Sydney.

Mudgee is a thriving country town, close enough to Sydney to have great coffee shops and a terrific weekend buzz. Gourmet foods can be snapped up at the Saturday markets and there are always plenty of pre-loved books to browse through.

There are more than 40 cellar-door operations in Mudgee, and you’ll find it’s a more relaxed and congenial atmosphere than at some of the busy Hunter Valley outlets.

Gulgong, the historic “Lawson” town, is a short drive away, and on the way home you can take a detour through Rylstone, one of the state’s most unspoilt country towns.
