South East Gippsland, Travel InformationGourmet Country With easy road access to Melbourne, South East Gippsland offers a wonderful blend of rural calm and sophisticated tourism infrastructure. Accommodation in Gippsland, Victoria
No visitor to Gippsland should miss Wilsons Promontory, mainland Australia’s southern-most national park. It’s an unspoilt area of granite headlands, unique vegetation and geology. The park is universally known as “The Prom”, and is famous for its native animals, birds, reptiles and plants, magnificent beaches and thick coastal forest. The park has many well-marked trails that lead to isolated beaches, clear water and sweeping sea and land views. Ninety Mile Beach is a system of pristine white sand and coastal dunes stretching from Port Albert to Lakes Entrance. It is best enjoyed by following the Ninety Mile Beach Wildlife Trail from Sale through to Loch Sport, then back along the coastline through Golden Beach and Seaspray.
There’s plenty of space to stretch one’s legs in the area, with superb bushwalks such as Lyrebird Walk and the Rail Trail, which offers the chance to inspect the huge cuttings, embankments and culverts made from local bricks over 100 years ago. Alternative farming such as emus, chestnuts, lavender, berries and proteas can all catch the visitor’s eye. The Grand Ridge Road that travels the length of the Strzelecki Ranges offers panoramic views of temperate forest, steep ferny gullies and rich farmland. |
