Maitland is a substantial city in the heart of the Hunter Valley. Maitland was once the principal town of the Hunter Valley and consequently it has many historic buildings. Of particular interest in Maitland is the Walka Waterworks Complex (1879-85) with its Italianate architecture and ornate brickwork, striking chimney and large reservoir full of waterbirds. Grossman House and Brough House are two elegant and identical red-brick Victorian townhouses (1860-61) which are now a period museum and The Maitland City Art Gallery. Visitors to Maitland can enjoy truly historic accommodation.
