Located 53 km north of Launceston, George Town is one of the most important historic sites in North-Eastern Tasmania with permanent European settlement dating back to 1811. Today George Town is a modern administrative centre. Attractions at George Town include the Old Watch House Museum (1843), 'The Grove'(c.1829), the fairy penguins which come ashore at dusk and the historic resort town of Low Head. The George Town Pilot Station (the oldest in Australia) houses a maritime museum. Visitors to George Town can enjoy an excellent range of accommodation.
