Oamaru is a modest-sized township on New Zealand's South Island. Once a major port, Oamaru shipped meat to the rest of the world starting in the late 19th century. Today the handsome Oamaru sandstone buildings are a fine example of historic commercial structures. Oamaru has 22 classified buildings which range in style from Neoclassical to Gothic. Visitors can watch little blue and yellow-eyed penguins and the Oamaru Public Gardens are particularly delightful in spring. Oamaru offers the visitor excellent bed and breakfast accommodation.
