Akaroa is a delightful seaside town located 82 km from Christchurch. The word 'Akaroa' means 'long harbour' in Maori which is an apt description. The first Europeans to settle in Akaroa were French and consequently the town has a distinctive French feel although the British soon insisted on claiming Akaroa as their own. Today the town's main attractions include the Akaroa Museum and the Akaroa Customs House. Visitors can enjoy Akaroa's excellent cottage accommodation as well as taking the Akaroa Historic Village Walk.
