Whitianga is located on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. Known originally as Te-Whitianga-a-Kupe, meaning 'the crossing place of Kupe', Whitianga is set on Mercury Bay. Today Whitianga's attractions include the Shakespeare Cliff Scenic and Historic Reserve and the Whitianga Rock Scenic and Historic Reserve. It is also possible to swim with dolphins and to engage in a number of sporting activities including horse trekking, bicycle riding and kayaking. There is excellent bed and breakfast accommodation in Whitianga.
