Yass is a pleasant service town on the Yass River 62 km north of Canberra. Surrounded by some of the best sheep grazing country in NSW, Yass has a number of heritage buildings, including Cooma Cottage (1835), which is now a museum, the Royal Hotel (1849), where bushranger Frank Gardiner was arrested in 1854, the Yass Post Office (c.1880-84) and St Clement's Anglican Church of Yass (1847-79). Also of interest are the Hamilton Hume Museum, the Yass Railway Museum, Riverbank Park, Yass River Walk and the very popular recreation areas of Burrinjuck Dam. Excellent accommodation is available.
